But by preventing them from eating from the Tree of Life, God was, in essence, protecting them from the consequences of eternal separation from Him.

3. The Divine Plan of Redemption

Even in this moment of divine justice, God’s mercy was still at work. The Garden of Eden was no longer the paradise it once was, but God’s plan for humanity was already in motion. The expulsion from Eden was not the end of the story but the beginning of a journey toward redemption. In the coming chapters of Genesis, we see the promise of a Savior—a seed of the woman—who would one day crush the head of the serpent (Genesis 3:15). This promise was the first glimmer of hope that God had a plan to restore what was lost in the Fall.

God’s Mercy and Justice: A Lesson for Us

The events of Genesis 3:21-24 teach us powerful lessons about God’s character. His justice is not arbitrary but rooted in His holiness, protecting humanity from the eternal consequences of sin. His mercy, on the other hand, is boundless, as He provides for our needs and paves the way for our redemption.

We, too, are in need of God’s mercy. Like Adam and Eve, we have all fallen short of God’s glory and need His grace to cover our sin. But just as God provided tunics of skin for Adam and Eve, He has provided the ultimate covering for us through the sacrifice of His Son, Jesus Christ. His grace offers forgiveness and a new life in Him.

Depression Does Something Bad to Us: A Reflection on Elijah’s Journey

Depression is a force that tends to rob us of many good qualities. These are qualities that God has already bestowed upon us, meant to guide us through life’s challenges. However, this loss is not merely a personal struggle; it is part of a larger spiritual battle, a plot by the devil to weaken our resolve and faith. Recognizing this is vital for reclaiming our God-given strength.

Take the prophet Elijah, for instance—a man known for his extraordinary courage. Elijah’s bravery was nothing short of heroic. Elijah was a man with a nature like ours, and he prayed earnestly that it would not rain; and it did not rain on the land for three years and six months. James 5:17

 We read that “he prayed that it would not rain.” This prayer wasn’t a mere request; it was a sincere plea born out of a deep desire for his nation to return to God.

 Elijah’s focus was on the spiritual well-being of his people, even if it meant enduring the hardships that came with a drought. He didn’t know how God would provide for him during this time; he only knew that a spiritual awakening was necessary. In his mind, if no rain meant people might turn back to God, then he was willing to face that dire situation alongside them. That is true courage!

Elijah’s bravery didn’t stop there. Imagine walking into the palace of King Ahab, one of the most wicked rulers, and boldly announcing God’s impending judgment. And Elijah the Tishbite, of the inhabitants of Gilead, said to Ahab, “As the LORD God of Israel lives, before whom I stand, there shall not be dew nor rain these years, except at my word.” 1 Kings 17:1

wasn’t just a message of doom; it was a declaration of God’s power and justice. After delivering this message, God assured Elijah that He would provide for him, guiding him to safety and sustenance.

 (1 Kings 17:2-16). 

But Elijah didn’t know this beforehand; he simply obeyed, trusting in God’s provision.

During this time, King Ahab was actively hunting Elijah.

'As the Lord your God lives, there is no nation or kingdom where my master has not sent someone to hunt for you; and when they said, ‘ He is not here, ’ he took an oath from the kingdom or nation that they could not find you. ' I Kings 18:10

Soldiers scoured the land to capture and kill him. Yet, in the midst of this peril, God sent Elijah to Sidon, the homeland of the wicked Queen Jezebel. Then, defying all odds, Elijah returned to confront King Ahab, declaring God’s truth even as soldiers sought his life

(1 Kings 18:15-18). What a brave man indeed!

The events on Mount Carmel further demonstrated Elijah’s .

(1 Kings 18:19-40).

Facing off against the prophets of Baal, Elijah stood firm in his faith, witnessing God’s mighty power in a dramatic showdown. There was no sign of weakness in him then. But after these intense encounters, Elijah experienced a physical and emotional collapse. The strength that had carried him through so much seemed to vanish, and depression set in. The once-brave prophet found himself fleeing for his life, gripped by fear and despair.

Depression is not just a modern-day affliction; it is a tool that the enemy has used throughout history to undermine the faith and resolve of God’s people. Elijah, one of the greatest prophets, was not immune to it. His story reminds us that even the strongest among us can falter under its weight. But it also teaches us that these moments of weakness do not define us. God’s strength is made perfect in our weakness, and He is always there, ready to restore us when we feel lost.

In recognizing the spiritual roots of depression, we can begin to fight back, not just with human effort but with the power of God. Elijah’s journey is a powerful reminder that while depression may rob us of our God-given qualities, it can never take away God’s love and provision for us. Let us, therefore, be vigilant, recognizing the enemy’s schemes, and holding fast to the strength that comes from our Creator.

Our Enemy, the Devil, Uses Depression

Depression can be a powerful tool in the hands of our enemy, the devil. His aim is to make us less capable than we usually are. When the devil gets us depressed, he wins a major success. I once read these words in a Bible: "I completely refuse to please the devil by being depressed." The devil uses all sorts of tests and troubles to make us feel depressed. Peter calls them "different kinds of troubles"

'In this you greatly rejoice, though now for a little while, if need be, you have been grieved by various trials,' I Peter 1:6

 The word he uses means "many colors," indicating the various kinds and shades of tests we face. But there is something great that will encourage us: God’s grace is always sufficient. Grace means God’s kindness, giving us what we do not deserve—He saves us and helps us. Peter writes about "different kinds" of troubles, but he also writes about "different kinds" of grace 

As each one has received a gift, minister it to one another, as good stewards of the manifold grace of God. 1 Peter 4:10.

 Remember Paul’s words too: God says, "My grace is all that you need"

'And He said to me, “My grace is sufficient for you, for My strength is made perfect in weakness.” Therefore most gladly I will rather boast in my infirmities, that the power of Christ may rest upon me.' II Corinthians 12:9

Notice Three Things About Depression:

1. It Often Comes When We Feel Extremely Tired

The devil knows the right time to attack us with depression. We are especially weak when our bodies feel very tired. It was certainly like this for Elijah. He sat down under a tree and wanted to die. He had no physical energy at the time.

'Then the hand of the Lord came upon Elijah; and he girded up his loins and ran ahead of Ahab to the entrance of Jezreel.' I Kings 18:46

First, he had run nearly 20 miles to a place called Jezreel. Then he heard bad news in the city, so he ran for more than another 80 miles. He was certainly very tired. It is no surprise to read that he felt depressed.

This may be the main cause of your depression. Perhaps you do far too much in a day and do not take care of your body. If you are God’s child, your body is the special house of the Holy Spirit.

'Let no one deceive himself. If anyone among you seems to be wise in this age, let him become a fool that he may become wise. For the wisdom of this world is foolishness with God. For it is written, “He catches the wise in their own craftiness”; If anyone defiles the temple of God, God will destroy him. For the temple of God is holy, which temple you are. Do you not know that you are the temple of God and that the Spirit of God dwells in you? and again, “The Lord knows the thoughts of the wise, that they are futile.” I Corinthians 3:16-20

 Do not be careless about your physical needs, as this brings dishonor to God. You should ask yourself some questions: Do I have enough rest and sleep? Do I make enough time for leisure? Do I need to relax with some activity? Do I have meals at regular times? All these things are very important, as they have spiritual as well as physical importance. There are times when it is easier to become depressed, and the devil will try to use them, especially when our health is weak.

2. It Often Comes After Great Spiritual Benefits

This was how it was for Elijah. He had had a great experience on the mountain (1 Kings 18:16-39). What a great success it had been! God had shown His power and greatness, and Elijah must have felt great excitement and happiness. Then came depression.

This often happens in our lives too. There is no natural reason for it—God has just given us a great benefit. But the reason should be plain: the devil wants to steal from us. He wants to take away our joy and peace in God. Making us feel depressed is the easiest way for him to achieve this. The devil can use just a minor event in our lives to make us forget about God, leading us into deep depression.

3. It Often Comes When We Least Expect It

This is the time when the devil comes to attack us with "the arrows of depression." Elijah left the place where he had been successful and had astonished all the people. He rushed off to Jezreel to tell people about God’s great success, but soon he was a very different man—afraid and depressed. His tears seemed to show that Jezebel had won.

Depression often comes when we do not expect it; it just appears in our lives. Remember Paul’s warning to Christians at Corinth: "The person who thinks that he is standing strong should be careful. He might fall" 'For as woman came from man, even so man also comes through woman; but all things are from God.' I Corinthians 11:12

Introduction

Depression is very common. It is probably the most common human problem. We may all experience it at some time in our lives. However, th Ie Bible does not leave us without help. This is a great comgfort to us at a time like this.

Many great men in Old Testament (OT) I times knew this awful feeling. They felt miserable and depressed. Things affect some people very much. Depression is a danger for them at some time in their lives. Depression is part of a psychological process. It would be a serious matter if this process were not there. It would mean that we would lose much in life. We would lose a sense of joy. We would lose a sense of excitement. We would not have any strong emotions.

Elijah was not the only man in the OT with depression. But we will use his experience for this study. 

And Ahab told Jezebel all that Elijah had done, also how he had executed all the prophets with the sword. 2 Then Jezebel sent a messenger to Elijah, saying, “So let the gods do to me, and more also, if I do not make your life as the life of one of them by tomorrow about this time.” 1 Kings 19:1-2

is the main passage. We must realize something about these great OT men. They were people like us. Someone translates 

17 Elijah was a man with a nature like ours, and he prayed earnestly that it would not rain; and it did not rain on the land for three years and six months. James 5:17

something like this: "Remember Elijah. He was a man like us."

There was a period of 400 years between the Old Testament (the first part of the Bible) and the New Testament (the second part of the Bible). At this time, people thought that Elijah had many strange qualities. They did not think that he was part of our world. To them, he was certainly not "a man like us." But James says that he was just like us. James thinks that it is an important fact. Elijah’s experiences were the same as ours. He had difficulties. He had tests. He knew what depression was like.

Let us now read this dramatic story in 1 Kings 19.
